Mercury retrograde, minus the extra drama
It isn't chasing you and it won't ruin your life: what it really is and how to make the most of it.
Mercury retrograde: the smallest planet in the solar system, which every so often becomes the esoteric scapegoat for anyone going through a rough patch. But let's see what it really is.
What is it, really?
Nothing more, nothing less than an optical effect. Mercury orbits the Sun much faster than Earth does, and when we "overtake" it, from here it looks like it's moving backwards across the sky. It doesn't stop and it doesn't reverse: it only gives us that impression.
When does it happen?
Less often than you think: three or four times a year, and each time it lasts about three weeks. We're in one right now (until mid-November). Before and after there's a "shadow period" of a couple of weeks when you can already feel it, or still feel it. As you can see, it isn't stalking you all the time.
What does it affect?
Mostly communication, because that's what this planet is mainly about: messages, misunderstandings, your phone dying at the worst possible moment… But also technology, paperwork, short trips that go sideways, contracts that pop up, or even that ex you never expected to come knocking again.
What is it good for?
Everything that starts with re-: review, revise, reread, reorganise and resume. Don't freeze up for fear of some catastrophe "because of Mercury retrograde": just get moving and make the most of this season. A few practical tips:
- Back everything up (photos, documents, all of it).
- Reread before you hit send. Yes, that message too.
- If you need to sign something, sign it, but read the fine print twice.
- Leave some slack in your travel plans and deadlines.
A spread for these weeks
I recommend a three-card spread:
- What can I review in my present, or in myself?
- What should I avoid these weeks?
- What am I free to pick back up?
And if the cards leave you with questions, you know where to find me. 🐦⬛
